Leicester Shopmobility

Leicester Shopmobility is operated by Leicester City Council. It offers free loan of mobility equipment including scooters, powerchairs, power-assisted wheelchairs, and manual wheelchairs. Membership is required but free; applicants need two proofs of identity, one showing home address.

New customers receive detailed instructions on safely operating the equipment. Equipment can only be used in the city centre area bordered by the inner ring road. At special request, equipment can be used to attend hospital appointments at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

People who rely on mobility scooters to navigate Leicester city centre describe the service as a genuine lifeline, with several reviewers returning over multiple years to hire equipment for days out. The scooters themselves draw consistent praise for being well maintained and easy to use, allowing users to move around independently rather than depending on someone to push them. Something that features in review after review is the warmth of the staff, who are described as friendly, welcoming and unfailingly helpful whenever someone arrives to collect or return a scooter.

Customers value the freedom the hire arrangement gives them, with one describing a pain-free trip into town that would otherwise have been dominated by difficulties walking, and another noting how it allowed a companion to enjoy the visit without needing to assist. The volunteers who keep the operation running are spoken of with real appreciation, and users express concern that reduced support threatens the availability of the service. The recurring thread is independence restored for people with mobility problems, delivered by a team whose kindness matches the reliability of the equipment.
