What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

York & North Yorkshire Wheelchair Service prompts a divided response, with the helpfulness of named staff standing out against wider frustrations. Reviewers repeatedly single out Helen, Amy and Chris for answering calls promptly and sorting out a leg rest that had initially gone to the wrong address, while Lorraine and Paul are credited with fitting replacement casters at short notice so a holiday could proceed, and Colin with engineer Chris for repairing equipment needed by a resident facing an urgent appointment.

The premises are described as welcoming and accessible, and employees are called kind, courteous and willing to assist. A recurring complaint concerns difficulty reaching the service by telephone, with lengthy waits and unanswered calls noted more than once. Some customers describe being steered towards equipment they had explained would not suit them, and others mention repairs that stretched over several days. Capable, personable staff are therefore set against inconsistent communication and service planning, with the prompt handling of urgent repairs by named engineers the point most often praised.

* Had to give 1 star rating as unable to leave review without * Considering this company work in the care industry there is absolutely no care, compassion or empathy shown in the experiences I have had with this company over the several years we’ve had the displeasure of their ‘wheelchair services’. I have never experienced a company that operates with such levels of deceit & unprofessionalism-totally inept beyond words. My son had to endure being in a wheelchair with a broken armrest, for a longer period of necessary time, all because York & North Yorkshire Wheelchair services were so unorganised in being able to get this fixed- they hire ‘technicians’ that turn up to appointments without the right tools needed to do the job (considering they have been previously informed of the problem along with the make/model of the wheelchair which they should already be aware of if logged on their system correctly) to then be told they will need to book another appointment to come back out again. Considering the wheelchair is my son’s only mode of mobility & independence, there is never any urgency for the appointment to be rescheduled as a priority. My son has very complex disabilities & because there was such a prolonged period of time to get the armrest fixed, this resulted in my sons scoliosis worsening due to not having the correct postural support from his wheelchair. This fundamental aspect is something that York & North Yorkshire Wheelchair Services seem unable to grasp! The most recent episode we’ve had was when spokes had become loose on the wheelchair. A ‘technician’ came out to fix the issue (after being told the make of the wheelchair & model of wheel required) however, they arrived with the wrong wheel & were told it would take another couple of weeks to get the right wheel & install. We were also told not to use the wheelchair on the basis they had deemed it to be unsafe to use. We have now been waiting a total of 4 weeks so far, after being told it would be 2 weeks (more lies). By not having use of his wheelchair this has resulted in my son a) not having his mobility & independence when at home b) not able to go outside & enjoy the fresh air/nature that he enjoys doing & c) missing important hospital appointments. We’ve not been able to have my son home for Christmas, all because of the farce of not being able to bring the right wheel to the appointment- how difficult can this be?! Not everyone is in the financial position to go private, which makes it even more worrying that this company are dealing with a large number of vulnerable NHS patients that are putting their faith for this company to provide them with what they deserve, but sadly don’t.

York & North Yorkshire wheelchair company is by far the worst company we've ever had to deal with. If you care about vulnerable loved ones, stay away from this place! If we had a "one off" bad experience we could deal with it. But, we've had years of lies, false hope and waiting times (one of which was 1 1/2 years for a chair suitable for my son.) He's condition worsened dramatically 10 fold because of no support for his severe scoliosis which was irreversible. If you ever have issues with a wheelchair, guaranteed, they will send out a supposed "technician" without the right tools or equipment and if your lucky, may be weeks to get it fixed, which yet again is what we're going through once again and now having to put safeguarding in place against the company. My son cant leave the house because the chair is not safe yet again. It really is beyond a joke how they have the contract with the NHS and how people put their trust into them for their loved ones which, let's be honest, as with anybody with a severely disabled family member, is hard enough. Scarily, knowing many other people who deal with this company, all have had the same experiences. Is leaving a review like this going to change them..Not a chance. People with severe disabilities, their family members and carers need more than this unprofessional waste of a company. GET NEW MANAGEMENT!!!

I got off to a bad start with this company who went to my home on two occasions instead of the health care facilities where I was resident. However thanks to the sterling efforts of Helen (and her colleagues, Amy & Chris) who answered the phone promptly, all was rescued & I not only got the leg rest I longed to have but got it adjusted also.
